Daily Share- Remember.
“And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”
Deuteronomy 8:2 KJV
I love getting to a promised land in my life, something I have been through the wilderness to get. Something I strived for, waited on, suffered to get. It’s such a time of peace and rest. It’s a time we are supposed to enjoy and celebrate. It’s so often though that once we get to our promised land we forget. We forget why it was even so hard to get there. We forget why we had to suffer through so much, and what it actually accomplished in our lives. We forget the purpose of the wilderness and begin to belittle it in our minds. Once this happens we forget our testimony. But God has something else in mind. He wants us to remember.
He wants us to remember how He lead us through that wilderness. He wants us to remember that when we were so desperate for Him, He guided our every step. He wants us to remember what it feels like, what it looks like to follow His lead.
He wants us to remember why He brought us there in the first place, before He let us go into the promised land and enjoy all He had for us. He brought us to that wilderness to see if we could handle it. Could we be humble enough in our lives to follow Jesus in the bad times? Could we be humble enough to realize that we are nothing without him? Could we be humble enough to understand that His plan and His ways (even though we don’t understand them so often) are so much greater than ours? Could we be humble enough to give Him the glory in our lives in the bad times? Why is that important? Well obviously if we can’t do these things in the bad times, we can absolutely not handle the promised land He has for us without messing it up and forgetting Him.
He wants to prove us. He wants the wilderness and the hard times to prove our character. He wants it to prove that our lives have truly been changed from the inside out. He wants the wilderness to prove us to be faithful to Him. He wants it to prove that we love Him no matter what the circumstances may be, up or down, good or bad. He wants us to remember that it’s a test as we go through the wilderness. He wants us to remember why we were tested once we get to the other side.
He wants to know what’s in our heart, if we will keep His commands when times get rough or not. If our heart is after Him, we will go where He leads even if it’s the wilderness. If our heart isn’t after Him we will be like the children of Israel we will be begging for Him to take us back where we started and want to forfeit the promised land at the first sign of trouble. He wants us to remember how important it is to have a heart after Him. A heart desiring the things He desires and not our own will. He wants us to remember these things so when we get to the promised land we can enjoy His blessings without messing it up by chasing after our own will and not His any more.
Remember the wilderness. Remember why you were there. Remember what you learned about your self there, what all had to be corrected and what all was already good. Remember what you learned about Him. Remember what it felt like to completely trust Him, and the rewards you got for doing so. Remember that being faithful is what He requires of us. Remember that it’s all for His glory. The promised land is wonderful, but without remembering the wilderness it’s looses its significance.
Perhaps you’re in a wilderness now. I’m just coming out of one my self. It isn’t the first and it won’t be the last. It’s been the hardest one yet though. Many days I tried to go back to Egypt. Many days I begged to just remain as I was. Many days I just plain didn’t think I was going to make it. But the Lord never left me. He never gave up on me and He won’t give up on you! He’s doing something in you, something that will lead you to greatness. Don’t stop. Don’t give up. There’s a promised land on the horizon. The Lord will see you through.
