“Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what
you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that
he is indeed the Savior of the world.”
John 4:42 NLT
I love the story of the woman at the well. There are tons of things that God speaks to me through that story, but today it’s this: Find out for your self.
I’ve heard about Jesus my entire life. For as long as I can remember we went to church. My dad was preaching from the age of 15, so way before I was ever born. My siblings and I were brought up with an understanding that God expected us to “act right” and so did my parents. There was no lack of spiritual guidance or talk about Jesus. I remember vividly sitting on the front row at church, people getting prayer, and God moving. I remember the testimonies I would hear of Gods goodness and might. I remember the visiting preacher coming to stay at our house and listening attentively to the conversations about the miracles God had, and was performing. I knew God was something wonderful, and amazing, and even beyond my wildest imaginations, but I didn’t know him.
I believed in God because I knew what he had done for others. I knew he was real in their lives. I was like the people in this town, the ones the woman at the well told about Jesus. They believed in Jesus because of what she told them. She told them of her personal experience and new found relationship with this miracle man, and they believed because they saw what it had done for her. It was wonderful that they believed. But that wasn’t meant to be the end of it for them concerning Jesus.
The woman ran into town and they all believed because of what she said, but then she invited them to see for themselves this Jesus she was talking about. That’s all it takes folks. That’s the ticket. She invited those people to find out for themselves. She wasn’t hesitant about it at all. She was excited about it. She wasn’t ashamed of this man she was telling them they needed to meet because she had seen what he was capable of. She had experienced that love, and compassion. She had gladly accepted a relationship with Jesus. She knew all those things she had heard about him were true, and now they were personally true for her too. So what was the reaction? They now believed because they saw for themselves. They weren’t disappointed or dissatisfied with the man that all the hype was about. Once they encountered Jesus, they knew, they believed for themselves.
So for one part of this, God was speaking to me about helping those who know of Jesus, to actually know him for themselves. That should be our main objective and I feel like I fail at that so often. So while that has challenged my outreach goals, God has challenged me on another level. What all concerning Jesus have I not found out for my self? Sadly the answer is a lot.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve experienced Jesus real and true. I’ve come to know him as savior, Lord, best friend and lover of my soul. I know him as my healer of mind, body and soul. He’s been my deliverer, my guidance, my counselor, my confidant. I’ve seen him heal cancer, restore marriages, provide financially. He’s truly been more to me than I could possibly tell. But I long for more. I long to see the dead raised, the lame walk, the blind see and the deaf hear. I want to see the things I’ve heard others speak about. I want to see the miracles the 12 disciples saw. I want to see the things my parents have seen. I want to find out for my self. Jesus wants me to find out for my self just what all he’s capable of. He want’s you to do the same.
So what have you heard about Jesus? What is it you don’t think could possibly be true? What is it that you know is true for others but hasn’t been true for you? It’s time to find out for your self. If you don’t believe, start by believing in Jesus. If you do believe, then it’s time to run to him! Run to him like the people in this verse did! Talk to him! Find out for your self all that Jesus is! I will guarantee you, you’ll end up like these people. You’ll end up believing not just because you’ve heard, but because you’ve experienced it for your self. Jesus is waiting for us to find out for our selves what all he truly has for us! 💗
