Daily Share- Are you well nourished?
“Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.”
John 4:34 NLT
In our current society we are bombarded daily with information about the best way to nourish our bodies. Take these vitamins, this is a superfood, this is bad for you, eat this, don’t drink that, and on and on and on. It’s overwhelming to even think of taking it all in. While I do believe that taking care of your body is very important, I sometimes wonder if I worry more about that than I do my spiritual nourishment.
In this verse Jesus is responding to his disciples who were urging him to eat. I would imagine Jesus didn’t really have much time to think about eating with a schedule like his. There was always a need to be met, and he was the one to meet it. People would come by the thousands to see him. He would spend endless hours serving the needs of others. I’m sure this was perplexing to his disciples. Why would the man who was The Messiah be serving others and neglecting him self? Thankfully Jesus always has an answer.
Jesus explains in this verse that he wasn’t neglecting himself at all. He was actually being nourished in a much greater way. He told them the key to living a nourished life, which we all want to do. I always want to have everything I need to live life. I don’t ever want to be lacking anything that will keep me from the best life possible. So how do I get that? By doing the will of God, and finishing his work for me.
It isn’t a one time magic pill that will make you nourished for life in your physical body, and it isn’t a one time magic trick that will make you nourished for life in your spiritual self. Jesus was letting us know here that it’s a daily devotion to doing God’s will, and being in it for the long haul to stick it out until his work is finished in you, that will give you a nourished life.
I have to ask my self, am I nourished? Or am I lacking what I need to do God’s will and stick it out to finish my course? In order to have what I need, I have to be dedicated to searching out Gods will. I have to spend time in his word every day, learning and growing. I have to spend time in prayer finding out the details of his plans for me, and the work he has for me to do. I have to spend time hearing and listening to his word. I have to spend time in Worship and just getting to know the Lord better. It is those things that will nourish me. And If I am nourished spiritually, everything else will fall into place.
It’s a daily struggle for me to balance my responsibilities, be a million things throughout the course of a day, and still take time to make sure I am nourished. I have to prioritize and remember what really matters in this life. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and worried, and forget my main goal, which is to fulfill the will of God, and finish his work for me. So I am thankful for a beautiful reminder in this verse from Jesus himself about what really matters in life. Being nourished from above.
